Ian Veneracion on bringing history to life in 'Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence'
Director Shugo Praico is hopeful that the six-part series "Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence" will be seen on the global stage, showcasing the power of Filipino storytelling.
"When we conceptualized this, we recognized the need to tell this story not just in the Philippines but globally. It's a story na hindi dapat natin makalimutan at dapat marinig ng ating kababayan," said Director Shugo during a talkback session after the screening of the first episode at the Red Carpet Theater in Mandaluyong City recently.
Director Shugo added, "We believe in Filipino talent. I believe na malakas ang ating storytelling. While doing this, we had an opportunity to learn about the excellence of our cast. Our Filipino artists need to be seen and heard on the global stage."
The director said that the production is still exploring which platform will feature the six-part series.
Director Shugo said that the story of "Drug War" is distinctly Filipino, rooted in our unique history that has shaped who we are today. "The entire cast and crew are also Filipino, showcasing authentic local talent."
When asked about his hopes for what the audience will take away from the series, Director Shugo shared, "I hope this sparks conversations among those who watch it about their views and beliefs. We believe that through open dialogue, understanding will grow and eventually elevate the level of discussion on these topics."
Ian Veneracion, who plays a priest in the series, expressed his pride in being part of the project.
“When I first read the script, I wasn’t sure how I would manage it because of my schedule. But I knew I had to join because this is our story—it’s woven into our history and humanity.
“After watching the episode, I was brought back to the emotions of Father Tom. As an actor, it’s my job to immerse myself emotionally in the role, and those experiences are still vivid. It’s a heavy feeling to carry.
“I’m truly impressed by Direk Shugo’s cinematography, editing, and storytelling. I hope many people get to watch this, because it’s our story. This is who we are.
“I also hope viewers from abroad can see this, as it reflects the virtues of Filipinos. The series brings up many important questions, and that’s exactly what we want—to spark conversation. Hopefully, it will inspire ways to improve our systems,” Ian added.
Produced by Rein Entertainment and KC Global Media, the gripping series also stars Jane Oineza, Harvey Bautista, John Arcilla, Lotlot De Leon, Romnick Sarmenta, Yayo Aguila, Joem Bascon, Ryan Eigenmann, and Gabby Padilla.
“Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence” is a compelling crime drama centered on Fr. Tom Carillo, a former priest stripped of his privileges, who joins forces with Yana Macabeo, a police officer haunted by her conscience.
Together, they risk everything to uncover the deadly conspiracy hiding the truth about the mysterious death of Kiko Agustin, Tom’s former protégé.
As they delve into the dark secrets of the Philippine drug war, Tom must face his own past indifference in a quest for redemption and justice for a life taken too soon.
