Maricel Soriano embraces softer side and mentors new generation in 'Haunted Carnival'
Veteran actress Maricel Soriano, long regarded as one of Philippine showbiz’s most formidable talents, is showing a different side of herself these days.
During a recent media conference for Regal Entertainment’s upcoming horror film "Haunted Carnival," Maricel reflected on her evolution as both an actress and a figure on set.
“I’m no longer fierce, but I still say what I feel,” Maricel candidly shared, dispelling her former reputation for being intimidating.
The press event, held in Quezon City on July 26, gathered the star-studded cast of the 2026 Metro Manila Film Festival entry, including James Reid, John Arcilla, RK Bagatsing, Charlie Fleming, Joaquin Arce, Prince Carlos, and more. Under the direction of Joey De Guzman, the film promises a blend of horror and heart.
Excitement was evident among Maricel’s co-stars. For Julia Barretto, working with Maricel marks both a personal milestone and a meaningful return to acting after a year-long hiatus.
"It’s my first time working with Ms. Maricel. It’s wonderful to have that kind of presence on set—someone who looks out for you. I’m eager to learn from her," Julia said.
She recalled growing up watching Maricel’s films and now cherishes the opportunity to collaborate and learn directly from the veteran actress.
Julia also expressed gratitude for the warm, supportive atmosphere Maricel fosters on set, especially as she navigates her comeback.
"When you’re given a chance to work with industry veterans, it’s natural to feel intimidated at first. But I’m grateful because they never make you feel that way—instead, they offer comfort and support."
Fellow cast member Fyang Smith echoed these sentiments, noting her excitement and the invaluable learning experience of working alongside Maricel.
Smith admitted that horror films are challenging, especially when it comes to acting out scenes that require reacting to imagined threats.
"Sometimes it’s difficult for me to imagine things that aren’t real, and that’s the challenge when making horror films," she said.
Julia added that she was initially hesitant to take on another horror film after her project "Bahay na Pula" in 2022. However, she’s now embracing the genre, with more projects lined up. "Ironically, it’s often what scares you that finds its way to you. Now, I’ll be doing two more horror movies in the coming months. I’m excited—it's definitely more fun to watch than to make!"
Maricel, a seasoned veteran of many horror films, shared her practical approach to the genre. "For me, when I do horror, I focus on doing justice to my role. I don’t dwell on what’s scary—I simply deliver whatever the scene calls for."
There's camaraderie among them, with Maricel offering praise and mentorship to her younger co-stars. She openly supported talk that Fyang Smith could be her heir apparent, lauding the young actress for her talent and self-expression.
Maricel also extended motherly affection to Julia, recognizing her unique charm.
For Fyang, role models like Maricel and Dina Bonnevie serve as guiding lights in her career. "Miss Dina (Bonnevie) is such an icon—it’s hard to follow in her footsteps. I want to be like her. And of course, there’s our mom, the Horror Queen herself, Maricel Soriano."
