'58th' goes to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026 in France

GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures’ animated documentary film "58th" has been officially selected to compete at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s most esteemed platform for animation.
At a press conference in Annecy, France, on April 28, 2026, festival organizers unveiled the competing films in the Contrechamp Feature Films category, with "58th" among them.
This milestone is a significant achievement for the film, placing "58th" alongside some of the most exceptional animated works worldwide.
"58th" pays tribute to the victims of the Maguindanao Massacre, a tragic chapter in Philippine history, and brings attention to the story of Reynaldo "Bebot" Momay, the massacre’s 58th victim.
This marks the first time a GMA Network film has been selected for screening at Annecy. It highlights the growing presence of Filipino talent on the international stage and the evolution of Philippine animation as a compelling storytelling medium.
"58th" is a documentary that weaves together animation and archival footage. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Carl Joseph Papa—making his third appearance at Annecy after “Iti Mapukpukaw” (The Missing) in 2024 and “Manang Biring” in 2016—the film is especially notable as the final work of the late Ricky Davao, who portrayed Reynaldo Momay. The cast features Glaiza De Castro, Mikoy Morales, Marco Masa, Zyren Dela Cruz, and Biboy Ramirez.

Founded in 1960, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival has become the global benchmark for animation. Each year, the event gathers leading figures in the industry and showcases the creativity and diversity of animation styles and techniques. In March 2026, Annecy joined the ranks of ‘A-list’ festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), now part of a network of 49 festivals across 29 countries on five continents.
This year’s lineup features the world premiere of a multi-part animated adaptation of "Batman: Knightfall," alongside the debut of the Looney Tunes short "Daffy Season" and two new episodes of "Ghost in the Shell."
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival will be held in June 2026 in Annecy, France, with "58th" screening as part of the official competition lineup.
In January, "58th" had its world premiere at the 2026 International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands, earning a spot in the Top 10 of the Audience Choice Awards out of more than 400 films.
Further details regarding the Annecy screening schedule will be announced soon.
