Good vibes, great flavors at Mario's Restaurant



I've always had the impression that Mario's Restaurant on Morato Avenue in Quezon City is the go-to spot for celebrities.
In the 80s, it seemed almost every day, newspapers and magazines reported that showbiz personalities were holding press conferences at Mario's. Some celebrities would also make late-night reservations for their families and friends to enjoy the restaurant's delicious food.
These days, it's not just movie stars who frequent Mario's. Even politicians have become regular visitors, meeting to discuss current events while savoring the unique blend of Filipino and Spanish dishes.


Mario's consistently draws a full house thanks to its excellent cuisine and elegant dining atmosphere. Making a reservation is highly recommended before visiting. Weekdays see politicians, movie stars, lawyers, and businesspeople dining here, while weekends bring in families.


Mario's, named after Nenuca Benitez's husband, has two branches in the Philippines: one in Quezon City and another in Baguio City, where it has weathered various calamities. On August 27, Mario's in Quezon City hosted a Sunday Buffet Lunch for notable food bloggers.


Upon entering the restaurant, you are greeted by an elegant, romantic atmosphere, accompanied by the soothing melodies of a pianist performing pop hits. Guests without reservations can relax in a cozy waiting area until their table is ready.


Mario's menu features an extensive selection of their signature dishes, including paellas, tapas, oysters, suckling pig, steaks, and salads. Each dish is freshly prepared, with chefs carefully choosing the finest ingredients. The attentive waitstaff enhances the dining experience, while gracious hosts—Anton Benitez, Eliza Benitez, Tess Laurente, and Lani Raagas—are always present to warmly greet and converse with guests.


In a recent interview for a magazine, Nenuca explained why the restaurant remains popular today. “It’s all in the details.  When I visit a branch, I stay in the kitchen to check if the dish is being cooked correctly. I walk around the dining area to make sure the tables are properly set and the customers are happy.


“The service has to be perfect. Take care of your staff well, and they’ll take care of your customers well. Many of our employees have been with us for more than 20 years. They’ve been loyal to us, and this has translated to so many loyal customers. We are now serving a new generation of customers.


"On many occasions, a diner would approach me and say he’s been dining at Mario’s ever since he was a child, when his parents took them here. Now he’s taking his own family to Mario’s. When this happens, it always makes us feel so proud and happy!" said Nenuca.


Mario's opened in Quezon City during the 1980s. Despite being surrounded by new eateries and bars, Nenuca stated that her restaurant will remain in this prime location, even with rising rental fees.


My dining experience at Mario's was delightful, highlighted by the delectable buffet offerings and the joy of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. Filipino-American actor Matt Evans has said that he appreciates his mother and his family more these days with the help of his afternoon teleserye "The Greatest Love" aired weekdays on ABS-CBN.
